SOLAPUR, July 19: Although the work of the Tembhu and Mhaisal irrigation schemes has been going slow, leaders of all political parties have already started crediting themselves with the work and claiming that Sangola taluka will be irrigated by 2000 AD.
With the decision of the State Government to hold the Assembly elections along with the parliamentary polls, all political leaders in Sangola taluka including MLAs, former MLAs and leaders of the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance are crediting themselves with the work which is still incomplete. In reality, the whole taluka is thirsting for water. Recently, the alliance government had attempted to defend its claim with the screening of a documentary, Krishna Aali Angani (Krishna at the doorstep). The fact is that the tender of this work is yet to be issued.
A total area of 50,000 hectare square will be irrigated due to Tembhu water irrigation scheme and 10,000 hectare square will be irrigated due to Mhaisal irrigation scheme. Inquiries at the Junoni office revealed that presently the work is confined to surveying the area. Actual work has not began anywhere.
The work of constructing a tunnel at Bajurgad in Aatpadi taluka of Sangli district is however going on a war-footing. The tunnel which will be two kilometers long will be semi-circled. Its width will be six meters and height will be five meters. The work is estimated to cost Rs. 1140 lakh.
The water schemes will benefit 7,000 hectares land in Kawate Mahankal taluka. The survey for the scheme has been completed in Talewadi, Karadwadi, Kombadwadi, Kaloobaloowadi, Tippehali, Kole, Junoni and Jujarpur villages of Sangola taluka.
